Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk

Sweetened condensed milk is inexpensive and easy to do at home. All you need are three ingredients and a saucepan with a thick bottom as a thin one can easily scorch the milk. The following recipe is made using whole milk, not powdered. Once completed it will result in just under 1 1/4 cup. It is just a few drops shy of being equal to the serving size of a can.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 whole milk
2/3 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons butter melted

Method:

1. In a saucepan add the milk and sugar. Whisk together and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat.

2. Once simmering change to very low heat and stir often. It will take approximately two hours to complete and will make one cup. If you are able to stay within reach of the pan you could cut the time in half by increasing the heat a little. You will however have to keep your eyes on it the entire time.

3. Once the liquid has been reduced to about half the amount, whisk in the butter.

4. Allow to cool. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate to allow the mixture to thicken. If not using the same day keep refrigerated for up to 5 days.

Have you tried making your own sweetened condensed milk? How would you compare it to the commercial brands?

  2. I'm totally going to have to do this. I use sweetened condensed milk in place of sugar/milk in my coffee!
