Alternative Uses for Baking Soda in the Home

Baking soda is a common products found in mostly every home.

There are many benefits to using baking soda around the home. It is all natural, simple, and inexpensive. Non-toxic and safe to use around babies and young children. It also has the cleaning power of commercial made cleaners except it does not give off a strong, unpleasant odor. It even absorbs the toughest of odors.

One of the most common ways people use baking soda is of course in recipes. Did you know that there are so many other uses for baking soda?

The following are alternative uses for baking soda around the home.

1. Keep unpleasant odors away

Place some baking soda in a container and place inside the fridge, freezer, and cupboards. Replace once a month. But do not through away what you replace. Keep it for cleaning. Let stand for at least 15 minutes, then vacuum. Repeat as needed.

2. Children's toys can be cleaned using 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 liter of warm water. Place toys in this mixture and wash or dampen a cloth with the mixture and wipe the toys.  Follow by rinsing with clear water.


In the bedroom:
* Sprinkle on mattresses in between changing sheets. Gives a nice fresh smell. 

* Sprinkle a little inside pillowcases when changing to absorb odors. 



In the laundry:

* To keep clothing fresh, replace half of each measure of laundry detergent with baking soda.

* To remove grease stains, either add baking soda to the wash load or pre-treat the stains with a baking soda paste (baking soda and water).
* Baking soda increases the effectiveness of chlorine bleach. Add 1/2 cup to your laundry, along with the usual amount of bleach. Your laundry will look brighter and smell fresher!

  3. These are some really great tips. I didn't know that you could renew your old sponges with it. I'm going to try the clogged sink one. Was just telling hubby we needed to buy drano because my bathroom sink is clogged with hair. Thank you. :)

      Plain baking soda will work to keep your drains clear. However if your drains are clogged pour the baking soda and then pour some vinegar. Take care to cover your hands in case of reaction from mixing the two. I did not mention this in my post as I wanted it to be strictly about baking soda. :)

      It seems as though people are becoming more conscientious about the chemicals in commercial cleaners. While they may clean our homes, they may be poisoning us and our families at the same time.
