The first trimester can be an exciting and often anxiety-inducing time. It can also come with some unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, achy breasts, and dry skin to name a few.

The following are ten essentials to help you get through your first trimester of pregnancy.

1. Reusable Water Bottle

You will need to increase the amount of water you normally drink to ensure that you are taking in enough for both you and your growing baby. Keep up hydration by drinking water every hour or so. Carrying a reusable glass or stainless steel bottle is a great reminder to continue sipping during the day. Aim for at least a minimum of 64 ounces per day. Remember you can also get water from your diet by consuming fruits and vegetables.

2. Prenatal vitamins

Folic acid is particularly important in the early days of pregnancy, even before conception begins. If you haven’t already been taking a prenatal, the time to start is now. Choose a prenatal vitamin that contains 100 percent of your daily folic acid needs, plus iron, DHA and other vitamins and nutrients.

3. Saltine Crackers

If you’re experiencing morning sickness or nausea, Saltine Crackers are a must. Keep a ziploc bag of crackers next your bed so that you won't have to get up immediately and walk to the kichen. Nausea is often worse on an empty stomach so letting your tummy settle before getting up out of bed can really help.

4. Organic Morning Wellness Tea

Many women experience nausea and digestive issues during the first trimester. To help soothe your stomach, try drinking Organic Morning Wellness Tea. Organic Morning Wellness Tea is a ginger-minty blend of organic herbs traditionally used to help prevent occasional morning sickness and pregnancy nausea. Formulated for pregnancy (and beyond!)

5. Comfy loose clothing

Many women find that they are most comfortable belly-wise during the first trimester. Plus if you’re experiencing nausea you don’t want something tight digging into your belly all day. Bloating is a serious side-effect for the first twelve weeks, so anything with a little room is a relief. Choose cotton, soft, and stretchy clothes such as loose dresses, skirts, leggings and blouses where possible. During this time there is no need to spend money on maternity clothes. If you need to extend the waist of your pants you canwaistline extender. This product is inexpensive and can help you to stretch your regular pants until you’re a little further along in your pregnancy.

6. Bra extensions

Before you spend money purchasing larger bras to support your growing chest, invest in some affordable bra extenders. These bra extenders give your current bras a longer shelflife throughout your pregnancy. The first months are bound to make your breasts extra sensitive, and the last thing you need is a bra strap digging into and agitating your skin.

7. Healthy snacks

If you are not able to eat full portion meals throughout the day then healthy snacks are important to have within your reach at all times.  Opt for snacks that are high in protein and fibre with low sugar content. Great choices include yogurt with berries, toast, oatmeal, trail mix, smoothies, boiled eggs, and fruits.

8. Body pillow

With all the changes going on with your body you may have a hard enough time sleeping at night. Try to make yourself as comfortable as you can. If you’ve been to maternity stores or shopping online maternity you most likely have seen these strangely shaped body pillows. These are what is known as pregnancy pillows. They are available in a variety of shapes from a full body pillow to U shape or just a wedge.

9. Moisturizer

Investing in a good body moisturizer early on is important. There are so many different skin lotions, moisturizers, and oils on the market. Some of our favorites are Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter, Motherlove Pregnant Belly Oil, and Burt's Bees Mama Bee Leg and Foot Cream.

10. Soft-bristled toothbrush

Did you know pregnant women are more susceptible to gingivitis? Preventing periodontal disease is crucial when you're expecting, so invest in a new, soft-bristled toothbrush. Make sure to brush and floss at least twice a day to help keep your mouth and teeth clean and healthy.
