Towels are what should give you an added feeling of cleanliness and freshness after taking a shower or bath. Unfortunately if your towels smell sour or musty you may start to feel unclean again.
The following methods can help to ensure that your towels are clean, fresh, and smelling good.
1. After using your towel hang it up to dry even if it is going to be laundered the next day. If towels are thrown and left in a tub, floor, or laundry basket then bacteria will breed.
2. Ensure that the washing machine itself is clean. Take a whiff inside. If you catch any unpleasant odors then it is better to tackle that issue first. Once a month run a cleaning cycle on hot water and add half a cup of baking soda and two cups of vinegar. The combination of baking soda and vinegar will break down grease or dirt particles that may be trapped as well as keep hoses clean. You can run a cleaning cycle once every two months or more frequently if you are washing heavily soiled loads.
3. Cut down on the amount of detergent you use per wash. The more detergent you use the more sour your towels will become. Detergent overuse can cause a build up of sticky residue making it easy for microorganisms to cling on.
4. Avoid using fabric softener. Fabric softener will cover up some of the odors however it can also trap odors which will linger over time. Instead pour half a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle.
5. Do a deep powerful clean to your towels at least once a month. Set the washing machine to the longest and heavy cycle using hot water. Add just half a cup of baking soda for the main wash and one cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. As soon as the washing machine shuts off remove the towels immediately to prevent sour odors or the growth of microorganisms.
6. Hang towels out to dry in the sun or in a dryer set on high heat. Ensure that towels are completely dry before folding and storing them. Even a small spot of dampness can turn into a breeding ground.

Awesome tips and hints. I was in my bathroom earlier and a couple of the towels had a bit of a stink to them, will totally put into action some of your pointers, especially cleaning the washing machine.
