Here are alternative uses for laundry detergent.

1. Unclog drains

Before making a call to the plumber, try this trick to unclog a blocked drain. Pour 1/4 cup of liquid laundry detergent down your sink, then slowly pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain. The hot water and slippery detergent team up to flush the clog right out.

2. All purpose cleaner

Mix five tablespoons of powdered or liquid laundry detergent per gallon of water, and use the solution to cut through tough grease and grime anywhere in your kitchen including pots, pans, the stovetop, and oven.

3. Floor cleaner

Fill your mop bucket with warm water. Add 1/2 cap of liquid laundry detergent and mix it in. Use your mop with this solution to wipe away dirt and grime from your hard floor surfaces.

4. Upholstery stain remover

The same stain-fighting properties of laundry detergent that help clean your clothes, also work on upholstery and carpet. Apply powdered laundry detergent to a stain, then rub gently with a damp cloth to work the detergent into the stain. Wait five minutes, then brush away the excess and repeat until the stain is gone.

5. Hand cleaner

Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to remove paint and car grease from your hands. While detergents are able to cut through stubborn grease, they can also cause skin irritation. Using the vegetable oil will reduce or even eliminate the problem and while keeping your hands soft.

6. Get rid of soap scum

Do you have those pesky soap scum marks around your bathtub, or in the sink? Don't waste time stinking up the bathroom with harsh bleach products. Alternatively, make a scum fighter with a mixture of powdered laundry detergent and water. Add just enough water to work the powder into a spreadable thick paste. Apply it to the soap scum using firm pressure, wipe in a circular motion, then sit back, relax and let it do the hard work for you. After about 20 minutes, simply rinse it away with hot water. That should be the end of the scum.

7. Remove carpet stains

Mix 2 teaspoons of powdered or liquid detergent with 1 cup of water. Apply the solution and use a scrub brush or old toothbrush to remove stain.

8. Bug repellent

Mix 1 part liquid laundry detergent with 1 part water and pour in a spray bottle. Spray around your house to keep bugs away.

9. Clean plastic toys safely

Mix 1/2 cup of liquid detergent with 1 cup warm water. Soak toys in solution and rinse with water.

10. Oil spills
