Breast pumps are a handy product to have around and pretty simple to operate once you get the hang of using one. Breast pumps are available in a variety of both electric and manual types. Breast pumps collect milk which then can be fed to babies using a bottle. This can be very beneficial for moms struggling to maintain an adequate milk supply, having issues with a baby to latch on to her nipples, or having to return to work.

Many mothers are able to successfully express milk with a breast pump. However, for some moms it can be quite frustrating and a real hardship. Using a breast pump takes time, enerygy, and lots of patience. When the pumping doesn't go as planned you may begin to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed. Don't worry you are not alone in this.

The following are common breast pumping mistakes along with fast and simple fixes which should help ease your mind.

1. Not drinking enough water

Staying hydrated is essential in the production of milk as well as being able to express milk. Often, when there are struggles to express enough milk, drinking more water can be a simple fix. It is also important to note that during your breastfeeding and pumping sessions you may become even more thirsty. Try to drink a full glass of water before and after each pumping session. 

2. Not keeping a schedule or sticking to one

If you’re exclusively pumping, it is necessary for you to stick to a set schedule to keep your milk supply going. If you are nursing and pumping, you won't have to worry as much of you miss a session every once and awhile.

3. Not using the right breast pump

The type of pump you’re using can definitely be a factor. Often the most efficient way to express a lot of breast milk during a pumping session is by using a double electric breast pump. It pumps both breasts and at the same time ramps up letdown.You may want to consider trying one if you aren’t already using one to see if it makes a difference in your milk output.

4. Using the wrong size flange

Using the wrong size flange can give you sore nipples and breasts, clogged ducts, and can even lead to breast tissue damage. If you are experiencing any of these then it is important to change your flange size. If you do not get the correct flange size your milk supply could decrease since they won't be emptying your breast efficently.

5. Not wearing a hands-free pumping bra

If you're exclusively pumping, a hands-free pumping bra allows for a more comfortable and relaxed pumping session. It frees up your hands since you don't have to be sitting and holding the breast sheilds in place for several minutes at a time.

6. Not pumping for long enough

A breast pump does not stimulate your breast the same way as a baby does. Breast pumping should idealy be 10 to 25 minutes with using a double electric pump and up to 30 minutes if using a single electric one.

7. Not reaching out for support

Do you have a friend, relative, or co-worker who is also expressing their milk. Reach out and talk with them about any concerns you are having. Chances are they may also have concerns and need support. You can also contact your hospital or birthing centre to access additional support.
