The following are ten methods to try that can help to increase milk supply.
1. Ensure a proper latch
A poor latch is often the main reason for a lack of abundant milk supply. Without a proper latch, a baby cannot remove the milk from the mother's breast well. However when babies latch on correctly and drain the milk from the breast, it stimulates the body to produce more milk.
2. Drink plenty of water
Breastmilk contains 88% water. This means that drinking plenty of water will increase your milk supply. To keep you from forgetting to drink water, keep a water bottle close to you wherever you may be. It is better to drink small sips of water frequently throughout the day than to gulp large amounts after long periods of not having anything to drink.
3. Feed baby on demand
The more often and longer your baby latches on for feeding the more milk will be produced. To do this feed your baby as needed and not according to a schedule.
4. Eat healthy well balanced foods
Breastfeeding mothers need more calories than non-breastfeeding women. These foods should be nutritious and high in fibre, antioxidants, iron, protein, and vitamins. Fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, nuts, and oatmeal are all quick and easy to prepare and will help you obtain enough healthy calories.
5. Drink Earth Mama Organic Milkmaid Tea
Earth Mama Organic Milkmaid Tea is a fragrant, comforting blend of organic herbs traditionally used to help support healthy breastmilk production and promote healthy lactation. Tasty iced or hot, with fenugreek, fennel, milk thistle, galactagogues, plus the power of nettle and raspberry leaf.
6. Switch sides during every feeding
Allow your baby to feed on the first side for as long as he wants. Then switch to the second side. This technique gives the baby fatty hindmilk.
7. Avoid bottles, nipple shields, and pacifiers unless absolutely necessary.
The less time your baby spends latched on the less your nipples are being stimulated. This results in less milk bring produced.
8. Express Milk
Using a breast pump, try to pump several times for 10 to 15 minutes daily after breastfeeding until you notice an increase in your mik supply.
9. Be comfortable,calm and relaxed
Find a comfortable place for feeding such as the sofa or bed. Keep some healthy snacks, water, reading material, or the TV remote close by.
Stress plays a major role in reducing milk production. Try to keep your mind clear of negative thoughts. Instead enjoy the bond you are forming with your baby.
10. Rest well
Whenever you can, rest when your baby rests even if it's just laying down on the sofa or bed and closing your eyes for a few minutes. Producing milk takes up a great amount of energy adding in the care you are providing for your baby and yourself.
