How to Get White Clothes Looking Whiter

White clothes are the hardest color to keep looking bright and new even after just a few wears. The appearance of discoloration can come from body sweat, oils or colors that bleed from other clothes. Bleach is an effective chemical product that does work well in whitening clothes. However it is toxic and smells incredibly strong leaving many people hesitant in reaching for it come laundry day. This is especially the case for many parents who worry about exposing their children to toxins.

Actually many people are starting to look for safer, less-toxic, natural DIY solutions when it comes to cleaning laundry. If you do choose to not use bleach for your whites here are some other options for getting them white and bright. The best part is that all the items used below are most likely already on hand in your kitchen.

1. Separate whites from colors. Even light colors can transfer onto whites, so make a pile for clothes that are white only, no exceptions, then wash light clothes together in their own load.

2. Don't overload your washing machine. Clothing will develop a layer of residue if the washer is overloaded. If there are too many items or simply too much dirt in your washing machine the rinse water won’t be able to bring those molecules back into solution in the rinse cycle.

3. Add the right amount of detergent. Too much detergent and fabric softener coats fabrics and when there is a lot of residue on clothes it acts like a magnet and sticks to dirt.

4. Lemon juice. Let your clothes soak in a basin of hot water and lemon slices for one to two hours, then wash as usual. If clothes are particularly dingy, boil the water, turn off the heat, add your clothing and lemon slices, and soak overnight.

5. Baking soda. With a homemade mixture,  you can whiten your whites without any additives in your washing machine. Combine four liters of water with one cup of baking soda, and drop in your white laundry. Let it soak, and your clothes will be fresh and clean once finished.

6. White vinegar. Pour 1/2 cup to 1 cup into the wash with detergent. It will whiten, help wash away detergent or soap residue, and soften the fabric.

7. Clean your washing machine. If your washing machine is full of rust and mineral deposits, your whites will come out looking duller than before you put them in. Prior to the next load of laundry, add 1 cup of white vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda to your washer’s rinse cycle to ensure a squeaky clean machine.

8. Dry clothes outside. Use a clothesline to spread your clothes out in the sun. The sun is a natural bleach and will give you fresh smelling laundry without the added chemicals.

A strawberry milkshake is a delicious, refreshing, and filling treat. These milkshakes seem to be enjoyed by many when they are creamy, smooth, and bursting with real strawberry flavor. During the summer they are a perfect treat or dessert on those hot sticky days. Try having one for breakfast as they will nourish your body and are sure to get your day off to a great start.

Sure it may seem faster and easier to just head out to a fast food stop and pick up a milkshake. The problem though is that we really don't know how the drink was put together. Many fast food places use syrup or pink dyes instead of real strawberries plus add extra sugars which are really not needed. That's what makes this recipe healthy. There is no sugar, ice cream, or syrups. Just natural ingredients.

It is just as easy to plug in your blender and mix your own. All you really need are four ingredients and just a few minutes to whip up. This is what makes it really convenient, healthy, and tasty.

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

1 cup frozen strawberries
2 cups cold milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon honey

Method:

1. Chill serving glasses

2. Place all ingredients in a blender  and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.

Clever Uses for Silica Gel Packets

Silica gel packets are often found enclosed in certain items that you purchase such as shoes, new purses, make-up kits, electronics, and beef jerky. They are used to absorb moisture and keep things dry. This reduces the chance of mold growth.

Here are some clever ways to reuse those free packets of silica gel instead of just tossing them in the trash.

1. Keep linen closets and dressers fresh. Keeping a few silica gel packets in your linen closet or dresser drawers is a cheap, easy way to keep your linens smelling fresh and clean.

2. Wet or damp clothes. If you are going swimming or planning to visit the beach take along a few packets with you. When placing wet clothes inside a bag ads some packets to absorb some of the moisture.

3. Keep documents safe. If you have important documents such as birth certificates, property leases, last will and testament stored in file folders or envelopes, add a few packets to keep them protected.

4. Stop camera condensation. When you use a camera outside in the cold and then go inside where it is warm your camera might be exposed to condensation that could leave marks across the lens, or affect the camera’s internal mechanisms. To help get rid of this condensation remove the memory card, battery, and even the lens if possible and place the remaining parts of your camera with silica gel packets.

5. Dry out a wet cell phone. Whether you have dropped your phone water or spilled a beverage over it you can save it using these packets. Remove the battery and any memory cards from the phone, then toss it in a bowl filled with silica gel packets. Let it sit overnight before powering it on again.

6. Keep fabric dry. If you sew or knit and keep fabric or wool stored away place some packets in with the materials to keep them from becoming moist, and possibly damaged

7. Protect make-up. Store silica gel packets inside your makeup bag or case to maintain dryness help to ensure that you have no messy makeup disasters.

8. Extend the life of razors. Oxidation and moisture is the reason that razor blades fall to pre-mature dulling. A good tip is to keep a container half full of silica gel and after finished shaving, blot dry your razor blade and store the razor in the container. Keep it closed.

9. Vitamins and tablets. Silica gel packets are often stored with this initially, as it helps retain freshness and to prevent mold and deterioration. If you find a bottle without any packets after purchase you can add one yourself.

10. Protect silver and jewelry. Moisture can lead to rust, tarnish and corrosion on silver and jewelry. Slip a packet in your silver chest or jewelry box to keep these items looking great!

11. Keep photos or collectables such as stamps or cards in pristine condition. Whether you keep these items in an album or box you can add a few packets to keep moisture away.

12. Gym bags. Keep a silica gel packet in your locker or gym bag to keep your change of clothes, shoes and other belongings from smelling musty or foul.

13. Keep windshield clear. Windshields easily develop condensation, especially in the colder months of the year. Keep a few packets on the dashboard of your vehicle to help your windshield stay clear.

14. Gardening. If you save your own seeds for planting next year, storing them so they don’t mold is important. Place different seeds in small envelopes and then put them all in an airtight container together with a packet or two. Seal airtight and store.

15. Luggage.  Anything could happen to your bags during a vacation. To be safe throw a few packets in with your clothes. This will help to prevent any mildew or musty odors that result from clothes getting damp or wet.

Do you throw away silica gel packets or save them?
